Reasons to be cheerful
In the depths of the economic gloom, here are three reasons to be grateful your career is in IT :-

1. Excellent rates of Pay

The average IT Salary for the last 3 months of 2008 was £35,236, according to itjobswatch.co.uk
In your IT career, a combination of accreditation and experience will earn you excellent rates of pay

2. Job security

According to research by the Learning and Skills Council, the top ten most credit crunch-proof jobs are in IT and include network engineers, IT security professionals, software testers computer programmers, and web designers.
In IT you have a lot more job security than many other industries. Without good IT support, most companies would not be able to function. As long as you keep abreast of changes in technology you have a career for life.

3. Up to date skills
As an IT technician, you are constantly learning. With the new challenges that each day brings, and the new technology that is constantly being produced, you are constantly developing new skills and knowledge. We will support you in dealing with these challenges by keeping your accreditation and knowledge current.

This Month's Jargon Buster
The Windows Registry is a directory which stores settings and options for the operating system for Microsoft Windows 32-bit versions, 64-bit versions, and Windows Mobile. It contains information and settings for all the hardware, operating system software, most non-operating system software, users, preferences of the PC, etc.

Whenever a user makes changes to Control Panel settings, file associations, system policies, or most installed software, the changes are reflected and stored in the registry. The registry also provides a window into the operation of the kernel, exposing runtime information such as performance counters and currently active hardware. This use of registry mechanism is conceptually similar to the way that Sysfs and procfs expose runtime information through the file system (traditionally viewed as a place for permanent storage), though the information made available by each of them differs tremendously.

The Windows registry was introduced to tidy up the profusion of per-program INI files that had previously been used to store configuration settings for Windows programs. These files tended to be scattered all over the system, which made them difficult to track.
